S4. Ep 2. Redefining expectations – Kenny Shiels

Northern Ireland International Women's Manager Kenny Shiels has been in football practically his whole life and with over 30 years in management his experiences and lessons learnt can be a source of inspiration to us all. I think it's also worth noting that you don't have to follow foot or be that interested in sport to listen and feel inspired when you hear the passion in Kenny's voice!

S4. Ep 1. Fatherhood – Marty Chappell

Fatherhood!…. A topic that strangely not many men actually talk about. Season four kicks off with  a conversation about that exact topic. Back in February I caught up with Mary Chappell to discuss how he is finding the new experience of being a father. The high, the lows, the emotions, the sleepless nights and everything in between!

S3. Ep. 8 – John McAllister – Legacy

When it comes to dominating your sport, you'll be hard pushed to find a more successful sporting organisation that the All Blacks. In this episode, John McAllister and I cut from the normal 'book review' structure and discuss, using our opinions and experiences and key takeaway messages from Legacy, the book by James Kerr.

When the going gets tough, the tough start changing.

Difficult times call for different solutions.

In his global bestseller, Legacy, James Kerr goes deep into the heart of the world's most successful team, the New Zealand All Blacks, to help understand what it takes to bounce back from adversity and still reach the top.

It is a book about leading a team or an organisation – but, more importantly, about leading a life.

The kind of life that you want to lead.

Acceptance

Following on from Stand Tall, Acceptance is my second attempt at Spoken Word Poetry. Taking inspiration from those around me this piece  attempts to encapsulate the struggles I've witnessed but also the strength of character that has helped that person pull through!

Acceptance

It’s what we all search for

long before,

we ever know what it’s for.

Words weighted in hate as others attempt to berate every sediment of our being like the girl trying to refrain from not being the same

As.

Everyone else on this merry-go-round walking on unsteady ground, feeling like she’ll never be found, as others compound her misery when they hound and try to surround her like she’ll never be found.

It’s the colour of her hair, the colour of her skin, it’s the language that she uses and yet  still gets abused.

But we should not confuse….the actions of the minority to speak for the majority.

They Stand and stare, point fingers and laugh without a moments care. Where do you go when there’s no one there……To capture our dreams or help as a life is ripped from it’s seams.

The sun beams and streams of light ignored as she feels abhorred-

She battles her demons and smiles politely fighting with her sobriety unhinged by society

As it..

Drives her towards the darkness she’s so keen to escape, as she tries to erase the injuries, memories and failed contingencies. Left with mysteries of her histories from relationships as violent as the winter -seas. She finds It hard to breathe with a moments ease. Her eyes scream in silence but still she remains defiant. Awake and unbroken she keeps hopin to be taken from this place, where she can find the space to fight those demons that’s she’s trying to replace.

Live and let live we’re told. Why are we so bold, driven towards the dissection of another for personal gain.

When.

No matter the pain it’s just not enough, we taunt and talk, twist and turn the words of another as we try to refrain from our own truth. If the truth be told and the youth could hold, their views and opinions we could abolish untruth to premonish the youth in cognation with the next generation

Live and let live we’re told.

If Acceptance is what we search for then why do we yearn for, the destruction of another. It’s as if we’re trying to cover…..UP who we really are. It can never  be, should never be, we should never see…this as the only way to be.

Millburn Primary School Podcast

Something a little different! Over a 6 week period, Gary in collaboration with Darran Wallace from Inspire Digital NI engaged with Primary 7 pupils from Millburn Primary School in Coleraine as they learnt about Podcasting. Pupils learnt about audio production, podcast structure and were encouraged to explore emotion through voice and music! And this is the final result of all that work and effort! A podcast, presented in it's entirety by the pupils!

In this episode, pupils share their most memorable moments from their time at Millburn, they also get the opportunity to put their presenting and interviewing skills to the test! We can't end this quick overview without a HUGE THANK YOU to Billy Ellis from Millburn Community Association who's foresight and support helped bring this project to life!

Stand Tall.

Like many of you listening, I asked the same question “What is Spoken Word Poetry?”… Spoken word poetry is a form of poetry that doesn't have to rhyme, but certain parts can be rhymed to emphasize an image or give it a lyrical quality. It’s mainly a performance piece spoken by the writer, allowing the author to paint to the picture with words, placing emphasises on words, phrases or slang were needed to bring them to life.

What you’re about to hear is my first attempt at writing Spoken Word Poetry. I don’t want to give too much away and ultimately would like you to draw your own interpretation from it. Though it’s central tenant is founded on my views of conformity, how I feel we are born to with the expectation to conform, it’s a push back against social stereotypes and social structures put in place to keep us in our boxes. It asks to listener to be aware of all the outside sources of influence trying to bend mould and move you to being who they want you to be!

Paul also gained 20 senior international caps for Northern Ireland. As you’ll hear, Paul was invested in self development throughout his playing career, looking beyond retirement and it is interest and knowledge of Psychology and it’s application to Sport that we chat about this week.
